    Format differences

    AVIF offers efficient compression and may contain HDR or more than 8-bit depth. PNG avoids another lossy compression stage, but this tool does not guarantee preservation of HDR, bit depth or original profiles.

    Quality, transparency and size

    Alpha is retained when a compatible image is decoded. PNG is often larger than AVIF. The output uses browser-decoded pixels; check colors if the original is HDR.

    Does AVIF to PNG retain transparency?

    Yes, when the AVIF includes an alpha channel that the browser can decode.

    Are HDR or 10-bit depth retained?

    They are not guaranteed. Canvas produces a conventional image; keep the original AVIF for HDR or high-depth workflows.

    Why is the PNG larger?

    PNG prioritizes storing pixels losslessly, while AVIF can compress very efficiently. PNG conversion does not guarantee a smaller file.

    What if my browser cannot open AVIF?

    A decoding error is shown and the file is not uploaded. Try a browser with AVIF support.
